Despite claims from fans about there being two giant monsters, there is only one. Differences in the monster's appearance, such as color and size, can be explained by lighting and camera angles. In the film, the military refer to just one: "Whatever it is, it's winning." The filmmakers have consistently referred to it as "the monster" rather than "monsters." Director Matt Reeves has confirmed that the way the creature is filmed merely creates the illusion that there are differences in size.
