To a certain extent, Arthur is illiterate or dyslexic. In his journal, he misspells words like "sense" as "cents" and "street" as "stret". In one entry, he wrote, "I hope my death makes more cents than my life." In another entry, he wrote, "I imagine that's how you die, on the stret." Ironically, he's able to spell "mental illness" correctly.
