Producer Jordan Kerner had a much different story in mind when starting to develop a third film. The plot would have involved the Ducks returning to defend their Goodwill Games gold medal, with the Games held in Europe this time and the Ducks eventually getting a rematch vs Iceland, but in the semifinals. Prior to the game, the Ducks would be out to dinner when another rival team insults Goldberg, starting a fight - but the Iceland team, also in the same restaurant, comes to the Ducks' defense. According to Kerner, the Ducks would then lose the semifinal game to Iceland, mainly as a result of being physically out-matched. Coach Bombay would then rally the team out from frustration at having lost, to stay and help Iceland train for the championship game. Kerner stated, "It's a story of your former enemy now becoming your friend...At the same time, for the Ducks, it would be about conquering your anger and conquering the things that once you thought you could never conquer all of a sudden you do, and you help others who helped you. I just thought to have the Ducks lose would have been a really great way to go out."
