The laser that kills the unwilling participants seems to be mercifully painless or at least so powerful it kills whoever it hits before they can even feel the pain due to none of those hit by it ever making any pained noises as they fall to the ground or needing a second shot from the turret to finish them off. The power of the laser can also seemingly be adjusted, evidenced when one man who ties with The Pregnant Woman and Katie is launched back several feet by the laser instead of limply falling to the ground like every other victim when he tried pushing both of them out of their circles. This could also be evidence that the laser turret is not automated, but personally controlled by one of the aliens who strictly follows and endorses the rules of the experiment.
