The story is based on historical fact. However, while keeping the character name of the hero's mentor, author Shusaku Endo changed the nationality of the hero, an Italian named Giuseppe Cara, to Portuguese, and gave him the fictional name of Sebastian Rodrigo (translated as Rodrigues).
