Before J.J. Abrams joined the project, Trevorrow was set to direct Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, which was the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga. The film was originally going to be titled Duel of the Fates, and was drastically different than what was actualized in Rise of Skywalker. Disney ultimately decided to change course away from Trevorrow's concept, but the director told Total Film that the development process was still worthwhile: "What I appreciate about having worked on Star Wars is that I really got a practice run at making a new version of something we loved when we were kids and bringing it to a satisfying conclusion. So I felt like I got a master's degree in that, during that time."
