Several of the dogs who portrayed Togo were from the eastern United States. Riptide, who lives in Mississippi, Sage, who lives in Georgia, and the main dog, Diesel, who lives in Newfoundland, Canada. Various other dogs also played this role. They were hand-chosen by the trainer Thomas Gunderson.
