Originally the seven civilians that are killed in the film were supposed to be killed by various agents of The Shop. Director Mark L. Lester thought it would be a great idea that it would be George C. Scott's character be the one who exterminates them instead of random, faceless agents. Producer Dino De Laurentiis immediately approved of the idea stating "Why should the star of the film be sitting in a hotel room having nothing to do."
