The filmmakers used blue screen 90% of the time, and greens creen for 10%. The issue with blue and green screens is that they can reflect colored light, particularly when a person or object is close ot the colored screen. This can produce a slight green or blue glow. The producers chose blue because it better matched the lighting paradigm and because red garments (a la spartan capes) look better if the slight effect of the bounced light has a blue tint (which would skew towards magenta) than a green tint (which would skew towards brown). Also, due to the greater color saturation of a green screen it is often best for separating out a background but it requires more care in setting up in terms of principle lighting.
