The film was the brainchild of writer William Rose, who first started talking about the idea in the late 1950s. Kramer produced and directed Rose's previous film It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) and the two became friends. It follows that Kramer was the obvious choice when it came to making Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.
