David O. Selznick proposed Cary Grant to star as Martins and Noël Coward as Lime following Graham Greene's original design of them being British, but then determined that the film be American friendly proposed James Stewart and Robert Mitchum in the respective roles. However to avoid the expense of borrowing stars from other studios, he used Joseph Cotten and Alida Valli from his own stable. Besides, Mitchum was in jail serving time for possession of marijuana.
