Although in the movie it seems to be only a few weeks or so, in the original book, the time between Gandalf departing after Bilbo's party, his visit to a stone city in Gondor looking for information about the ring and his return to Frodo in his home at night spans about 17 years. This is shortened in this film to a few weeks at most, although it was kept in the animation version Il signore degli anelli (1978). Likewise, while Frodo leaves the Shire with the Ring the same night that Gandalf visits him, in the novels, he takes several weeks or even months to sell his house and lands, and move to another area as a way of explaining his departure from the Shire. Not revealed in the movie, the stone city visited by Gandalf is Minas Tirith in Gondor, which would have more relevance in Il Signore degli Anelli - Il ritorno del re (2003).
