The main differences between the book and the movie are that in the book, the main character Joe Leland (who would become John McClane) is visiting his daughter and not his wife, and there is an actual terrorist attack rather than an elaborately staged robbery. The love interest in the book is the flight attendant from Joe's flight into LA, and his daughter dies at the end when the main antagonist falls and drags her to her death. Additionally, Joe is permanently crippled by the time the book is over.
