The original 1975-1984 Emmy Winning iteration of this show; was essentially a shock drama. There are a lot of shock moments on this original show; scenes that shocked people's sensibilities in 1975; and even more today, some of them. There was plot on one of the episodes that involved Ann getting a prostitute for one of her clients. There was another episode that had both Ann and Alex's school paddling him; giving him corporal punishment; for ditching class. There was another episode that had Julie as a 17-year old; running away with her 40 year old boyfriend. There was a scene in the Barbara's Emergence episode that had one of Barbara's dates trying to rape her. This is before Ann runs in; kicks him in the butt (literally); and kicks him out of the apartment. None of these episodes would have been made today. Indeed, the 2017 reboot; while getting rave reviews from the critics; has few if any shock moments in it. Lear is less interesting in shocking audiences now than simply educating them; and widening their parameters about race; gender; and other issues. It should also be noted that while the 2017 is getting much better reviews than the original; the ratings are also lower; the original 1975 was in the top 20 for all but one year it was on the air.
