The decision to have Tony and Jeannie get married in season 5 was made by the network, hoping a change would improve the ratings. Barbara Eden speaks often about how much she disagreed with the decision (the whole cast hated the change). She does not believe a genie is human (no matter how hard Jeannie tried to be) and that a marriage between a genie and a human is not possible, unlike witches who are humans. And with Jeannie becoming a "typical" housewife instead of a genie, the opportunities for comedy just weren't there anymore. Also the relational tension that drove the show was now gone, there was no longer the question "will they or won't they." And in Eden's opinion, once they married, the show was no longer any different than Vita da strega (1964). (Newsflash: it had never been different, since it was directly mimicking "Bewitched.")
