The novelization gives us some background information on Kate's relationship with her father. General Brewster was such a workaholic that his wife left him. Mrs. Brewster approved of Kate's engagement, but Kate wanted her father's approval too. He granted it, but never met Scott. Kate was an only child. Also, she is not sure about marrying Scott, and he is nervous about meeting her father. Kate enjoys working with animals because you know where you stand with them. When Kate was born, her family was stationed in Germany, at Ramstein. Because she was born as an "Air Force child" it explains why she knows the difference between a real gun and a paintball gun when John pulls one on her.
