Horror films are known to give their villains some form of mental illness or personality disorder to explain or even excuse their actions, often without even accurately representing the mental illness they're supposed to have. This has always been a subject of criticism for horror films, especially due to rising awareness and understanding of mental health being on the rise. This film attempts to correct that by having Sam, the main protagonist, hallucinate talking to the ghost of her father, Billy Loomis, and is shown taking medication that's later revealed to be an anti-psychotic. Even though Sam is struggling with past trauma, she is not the killer and is otherwise portrayed as a normal and functional person. This is much closer to reality, as people with mental health disorders can live relatively normal lives with the right treatment, despite possible prior instances of instability and trauma.
