Vic Armstrong was under serious consideration to direct, and would have been next to be offered the job if Roger Spottiswoode had not accepted. Spottiswoode called Armstrong to tell him this and to apologize, saying "I've just taken your movie." He then asked Armstrong if he wanted to direct the second unit.
