"Southwest General" was a parody of the soap opera "General Hospital" and having a doctor played by George Gaynes, who had played the villainous Frank Smith on GH, gave it an actual connection. Also, the name of the nurse played by Jessica Lange's character was "Nurse Charles," after "Port Charles," the fictional city in GH.
