When Merrick (John Hurt) goes to sleep in his final scene, he decides to lie down instead of sleeping upright as he usually did. This is tragically accurate as the cause of Joseph Merrick's death was his attempt to sleep like a normal person. By lying down, the weight of his head proved too heavy and he broke his neck attempting to get up.
