The urban legend that inspired this film, the original, and its 1993 made-for-TV sequel as well as many other movies, "The Babysitter And The Man Upstairs" does, in fact, have some basis in reality. In 1950, a 13-year-old girl named Janett Christman was raped and murdered while babysitting in Columbia, Missouri. The three-year-old boy she was taking care of was unharmed and slept through the ordeal; she had called the police but the call ended before she could give any information regarding her location and as it was 1950, the call could not be traced. There was a suspect, but he was never charged and the case remains unsolved. Three years later, a 15-year-old in Wisconsin named Evelyn Hartley was abducted while she was taking care of a baby girl. As before, the child was unharmed but the house showed signs of a struggle; some drops of blood, matching Evelyn's blood type, were found in the basement and outside the house, but the case went cold within days. Evelyn is still listed as a missing person.
