Although not specifically stated, the bulk of the story takes place during the late 1970s; a 1979 wall calendar is visible midway through the movie. During this time, N.A.S.A. needed Garrett's service as an astronaut the least. The final Apollo mission was in 1975, and the next manned space flight was the first Space Shuttle mission in 1981.
