Just after Korben has lunch, his mother calls and he strikes a match, which apparently falls apart, so he takes another, which is shown to be the second-last match, from a box and strikes it. Korben is so distracted by being told that he won the contest that the match burns down so far that he shakes it out. General Munro then arrives soon afterward, then LeeLoo, then there is a police raid before Korben finally is knocked unconscious by Father Vito. All of those events conspire to intervene in Korben using the last match (turning it into a Chekhov's gun), upon which Earth's fate later would depend.
