When crafting season 2, creator Bryan Fuller revealed his original 7-season plan for the show, in which season 3 would explore the origins of Hannibal Lecter, season 4 would be Red Dragon (2002), season 5 would be Il silenzio degli innocenti (1991), season 6 would be the Hannibal (2001) book and then season 7 would be a resolve to the ending of that book. However, after being unable to obtain the rights to Silence of the Lambs or any of its characters, and seeing the ratings of the show, he decided to speed things up, so season 3 is a merge of Hannibal Rising, the Hannibal book, and Red Dragon.
