It has been alleged that Trevor Howard did not want to act in the film, largely because of his loathing of Marlon Brando, with whom he had clashed while making Gli ammutinati del Bounty (1962). He only accepted the role when he learned he would be acting with Harry Andrews, his long-time friend of many years. Howard and Andrews worked previously in Il lungo duello (1967), I seicento di Balaklava (1968) and I lunghi giorni delle aquile (1969).
