In season 1, the first man to enter the upside down is clad in a full biohazard suit and is named Shepherd. This is an obvious nod to the cult 80s movie C.H.U.D. (1984), where Daniel Stern plays the protagonist Shepherd. The biohazard suits are also almost identical to the ones worn by the government scientists in CHUD.
