The Plantagenets are mentioned throughout the series, and it is implied that the Crawleys are descendants. The Plantagenets started with King Henry II in the 12th century, so it makes sense that Lord Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham, would descend from the clan. In addition to seeding nearly every royal family in Europe since the Middle Ages, the Plantagenets' titanic reproductive activities also produced a larger number of American Presidents.
