Director Chris Columbus revealed in a Nov. 2020 interview that John Candy, who was a huge star at that point, did his airport cameo as a favor to the movie's producer and screenwriter, John Hughes, and improvised almost all of his lines. Although he agreed to be paid to scale, he wasn't happy with the fact that they only paid him $414 for his efforts; even the guy who played the pizza delivery boy earned more.
