Reason why Joss Whedon was brought in to do some uncredites re-writes on the script, mostly changing some characters and most of the dialogue, is because studio and producers were impressed by his 1993 spec Suspension, which sold for $ 750,000 against $ 1 million. Much like Speed was considered to be "Die Hard on a bus", Suspension was described as "Die Hard on George Washington Bridge". The plot of the script was about newly released ex con who is also a martial artist who gets trapped on George Washington Bridge with hundreds of other people as terrorists lead by psychopathic Chinese mercenary take it over and threaten to blow it up and kill everyone unless ransom is paid, and ex con and some female police officer are only ones who can stop them. Although the script was put into production in 1995 and Whedon even did some re-writes on it, it was never made, but years later in mid 2010's it was brought back into production again for some time and Liam Neeson was attached to star in the film, but once again it was cancelled.
