Nate Stevenson revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that Netflix had ordered a 52 episode series from the very start, allowing the writers to tailor the entire series to that amount. The original idea was to release the episodes as 4 seasons of 13 episodes each, but after the success of the first season, Netflix decided to split season 2 into two parts (of 7 and 6 episodes, respectively). After that they went back to the original plan and released season 3 and 4 as 13 episodes, making the series last for 5 seasons in total.
