Set in 1870s New Mexico Territory, the territorial capital would have been Santa Fe, which had a population around 4,600. The New Mexico Territory was organized in 1850 after the end of the Mexican War and it and other areas were ceded to the United States. In the 1870s, the New Mexico Territory had a population around 100,000.
