According to EW, Grant Gustin was actually the first person that casting director David Rapaport saw for the role. He continued the search mostly at the behest of the network executives, before ultimately selling them on Gustin following a chemistry test with Emily Bett Rickards' Felicity Smoak. Rapaport knew Gustin to be an "affable, dorky, charming, fun dude". He subsequently believed that lent itself to both being a relatable everyman and playing the goofier side of having superpowers thrust upon you. Equally, Amell knew immediately that Gustin was a perfect choice. After so many seasons of The Flash, and with even more to come, it's almost impossible to disagree with that belief and even harder still to envision anybody but Gustin as Barry Allen.
