In season 3, the character Lexa was killed off by a stray bullet right after consummating her love with her female partner. This (along with her lacking any agency in her death) lead to major criticism from viewers and media, a national debate on the frequency and impact of the Bury Your Gays trope, and international fan-led initiatives. Show runner Jason Rothenberg released an apology three weeks after the episode aired, after receiving criticism from media and viewers for dismissing and ignoring the growing backlash. In 2020, Rothenberg said that Lexa's death was his biggest regret of the series. Since the episode, Lexa's death and the controversy surrounding it has been cited by media for bringing the issues with LGBTQ representation and depiction in fiction to mainstream international attention.
