Among the many things that made Edmund Gwenn the ideal Santa is the fact that he was a very short man. In the original Clement Moore poem Santa is described as a "jolly old elf." This apparent conundrum has sparked a lot of argument over the years about whether an elf can perform all of the functions that the adult-sized Santa requires. But all of the debate is useless because both Santa and elves are magical beings who can be whatever they want to be.
