Rian Johnson stated in an interview that the puppet of Yoda used in The Last Jedi was made by going to the archives from L'Impero colpisce ancora (1980). They used the original mold, then next they went to the woman who painted the original puppet and then lastly went to Frank Oz to complete a customized puppet of Yoda to recreate the model from the Empire Strikes Back.
