It took four and a half hours of makeup and prosthetics for Austin Butler to physically transform into Elvis Presley from young adulthood onward. "We did fewer prosthetics on his face for when he was younger to just keep him fresher and a bit more round-faced," explains hair and makeup designer Shane Thomas. Thomas further states, "As he got older, he sort of was a little more chiseled." Prosthetic cheekbones and chin were applied to Butler when he was portraying Elvis in the 1950s. Subsequently, chin and jaw prosthetics were applied to the actor when he was portraying Elvis in the 1960s and 1970s.
