The line "He's really not dead, as long as we remember him" by Dr. McCoy was an idea by director Nicholas Meyer. He had come across an article about World War II diplomat Raoul Wallenberg who disappeared in 1945, and whose fate is a mystery. The article concerned the possibility of Raoul Wallenberg being alive and contained the phrase: "He's really not dead, as long as we remember him."
