Sam's monologue during the finale wasn't originally planned. He was only supposed to say "By rights we shouldn't even be here," and then stare silently out of the window. But during the editing of the montage featuring the victories in all the battles, it was felt that a narration was needed, so they chose to combine this with Sam's scene. New lines were written for Sean Astin during post-production and looped into the scene.
