Recurring theme of broken communication (another kind of eyes being shut versus open): Towards the end of "We Don't Talk About Bruno", the family sings "He's here!" together, but not everyone is saying the same thing and/or the words have a double or even triple meaning. Since Mariano's approach is interwoven in the number, it seems like they are all announcing their guest has arrived. However, at least one of the family, Dolores, is saying Bruno is here as well. Triple meaning in that Bruno is "here" literally and figuratively, as his "absence" is so strongly felt they all have to consciously choose not to talk about him. Abuela Alma is the one Madrigal in the song whose lines truly have nothing to do with Bruno. She is even outside Casita - both lyrically and physically apart from the conversation - during the entire song.
