Regarding "Buttons" in the title of the film: As explained in the movie, the young children and orphans who are sent to work at the cotton mill are too small to use the factory equipment, so they are tasked with sewing buttons onto garments. Young Annabelle lacked the skills to use the sewing machines and other equipment so she was put with these younger children, sewing buttons onto fabric with no pay. A group of "bully" girls gave Annabelle the nickname "Buttons."
