In the source novel, Oliver is revealed to be the son of an upper-middle-class family that Mr. Brownlow knew who was sent off to the workhouse as an infant by a cruel black-sheep relative. While some film adaptations simplify this by making Brownlow himself Oliver's blood relative, this version eliminates any information about Oliver's birth family, leaving him as simply another anonymous orphan like the rest of Fagin's gang.
