Final film in director Sergio Leone's lesser-known "Once Upon a Time Trilogy" - the other two films being C'era una volta il West (1968) and Giù la testa (1971). After completing the Dollars trilogy (Per un pugno di dollari (1964), Per qualche dollaro in più (1965) and Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (1966)), Leone wanted to make Once Upon a Time in America his next movie, but studios demanded that he make another western for them first. Leone eventually developed two westerns, C'era una volta il West (1968) and Giù la testa (1971), that, combined with this film, formed a second trilogy of films about "three historical periods which toughened America". He even turned down an offer from Paramount to direct Il padrino (1972) to pursue this trilogy project.
