In the book the killer, Bud Collingworth, who's the older brother of the boy the kids run over at the beginning; David Gregg, assumes two separate identities, Bud and Collie, and infiltrates Julie and Helen's lives that way; pretending to be a suitor to both of them; but really setting them up for murder. Bud is described as a young 23 year old handsome faired haired guy with "dark eyes", a war veteran. (Much different from Ben Willis' hulking middle-aged phantom fisherman in the novel!) He ends up stealing Julie from Ray at one point, and two become boyfriend/girlfriend! It's not until the end of the story we realize "Bud" and "Collie" are the same person; we have assumed they're two separate characters up to this point. He also shoots Barry and paralyzes him in one scene. Ray figures out Bud/Collie's identity at the ending and clubs him over the head as Collie is trying to attack Julie. Nobody dies in the book; except David Gregg before the story starts; and the kids turn themselves in for the hit and run at the ending. Also there are hints that Julie's mom is psychic, and she seems to predict Bud's attack on Julie at the ending and other calamitous events throughout the story.
