This is the only adaptation of "Carrie" where the title character actually survives the prom incident and is taken to Florida by Sue Snell after faking her death so she can start a new life. The drastic ending change was designed to allow a "Carrie" television series sequel in which she would help other people with telekinesis control their powers. However, as a result of poor ratings, the television series was never made.
