The Columbia Pictures studio was developing a screen adaptation of the 1964 source novel of the same name by Joanne Greenberg during the mid-late 1960s according to an article published in the 15th June 1967 issue of 'The Los Angeles Times' newspaper. The attached key creatives at this time were: lead actress Natalie Wood, director Sydney Pollack, producer Al Wasserman and screenwriter David Rayfiel. Principal photography was scheduled to start early in 1968 but this was delayed and was the first of a number of postponements.
