First live-action adaptation of a fashion doll line to hit theaters (the American Girl films based on the Mattel doll line go either straight-to-video or television). The critical and financial failure of this film effectively killed off any interest in other studios for making live-action films based on fashion doll lines. It wouldn't be until 2023 when another attempt would be made, when Barbie (2023), based on Mattel's iconic doll line, would be released.
