The family that Tony and company belong to is the DiMeo family of North Jersey founded in the 1950's by Ercole "Old Man" DiMeo. Though founded by DiMeo, the true power in the family lay with Captains and brothers Corrado "Junior" Soprano and Johnny Boy Soprano. The DiMeo's have long standing ties with the "Five Families" of New York particularly the Lupertazzi Crime family. "Old Man" DiMeo is never seen in the series although he is referenced a few times in season one. It is hinted that DiMeo was sent to jail in 1995 and had picked Jackie Aprile as acting boss. Aprile's passing in 1999 led to the fight for control of the family by Junior and Tony during season one. Tony and his fellow captains with support of the Lupertazzi's agreed to give Junior the title of boss with Tony in actuality running things behind the scenes. Upon Juniors arrest in season one Tony de facto ascended to the title of Boss although Junior was allowed to keep the title so as to be the target for the government. After Junior and Tony's rise to power the family is thereafter referred to as the Soprano family. The fate of DiMeo is left unresolved in the series although it's assumed he still in jail or has passed on.
