A show featuring a gay couple raising a child was very controversial, and was met with skepticism over whether it would survive its first season. The creators especially were worried that people wouldn't even give the show a chance, but remained determined to depict Mitch and Cam just like any other family. Modern Family has since emerged as one of the most successful and popular shows of all time, and the creators have heaped all praise on Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet for their ability to make the audience fall in love with them.
