David O. Selznick only submitted Hattie McDaniel for Oscar consideration to the Academy when she came to his office with pages of glowing reviews for her performance from film critics; and she then lobbied for him to submit her for consideration. Hattie McDaniel was the first African American man or woman to be nominated for an Oscar; the first to win; and the only black woman to win an Oscar until Whoopi Goldberg's 1991 Best Supporting Actress award for Ghost.
