Padmini Kolhapure confirmed in an interview that she had been approached for the role eventually played by Rekha but she could not accept it due to her contractual obligations with other film-makers. Yash Chopra then signed Parveen Babi only to replace her with Rekha. Considering she was only 15 or 16 at the time - it would not have looked convincing had Padmini accepted the role.
